The complicated procurement process is a well-known deficiency of the semiconductor manufacturing industry, especially regarding the supply chains that equip fabs with the machines required to produce chips. Semiconductor industry pushes for security standards
In Short: The semiconductor industry, led by trade association SEMI, is establishing cybersecurity standards for equipment in order to protect systems from cyber attacks, viruses, and IP theft. The two new standards are around malware-free equipment integration and guidelines for computer operating systems and other technologies in equipment.

German chipmaker Infineon prepared to handle increased competition from China, CEO says
In Short: Infineon is one of the largest semiconductor companies in the world and is a top player in automotive, power and security chips. In preparation for increased competition out of China, Infineon recently completed its takeover of U.S. company Cypress last month and reported a loss of 128 million euros for its fiscal third quarter.

In Short: AMD’s president and CEO Dr. Lisa Su has been named the 2020 recipient of the SIA’s highest honor, the Robert N. Noyce Award. This award recognizes a leader who has made outstanding contributions to the semiconductor industry in technology or public policy. Under Su’s leadership, AMD became a leader in high-performance computing, graphics technologies for the PC, data center, and gaming markets. Congratulations to Dr. Su from the Moov team!

China’s Most Ambitious Semiconductor Project Halted
In Short: Taiwan News reports a $20b (USD) project to build two facilities in Wuhan for state-backed chip company, HSMC has stalled due to failure to attract additional investors. Analysts speculate that the venture could survive if China’s largest foundry, SMIC, gets involved. However, the future of HSMC currently remains uncertain.

Korean chipmakers have to change strategy amid U.S. trade ban
In Short: South Korean chipmakers and display manufacturers are set to lose a major client in China when trade sanctions are implemented on Sept. 15. Major Korean chipmakers like Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc., have registered for licensing to do business with companies that interact with Huawei’s supply chain per the new U.S. trade regulations, but as of Sept. 14, neither had received approval.

Most startups in the tech world are done by engineers or scientists. The idea behind Moov, a platform for buying and selling used equipment, is the brainchild of investment bankers.
In effect, Moov has built a futures platform for semiconductor manufacturing equipment, with prices updated every few minutes from all over the world.
“The basic idea is that every few years, companies upgrade their equipment,” said Steven Zhou, Moov’s CEO. “But that equipment is usable for 15, 20 or even 25 years. So what we discovered is there’s a ton of value being left on the table. If a company is no longer using equipment and it costs $1 million to buy, they’re either moving it to a landfill or an off-site warehouse. We estimate there’s about $50 billion worth of fair market value of idle and surplus equipment in semiconductor manufacturing equipment. And if you start branching out to other closely related segments, like PCBs, SMD, LEDs, photonics, solar, or whatever, there’s literally hundreds of billions of dollars worth of equipment that’s offline and that needs a channel through which it can be re-purposed or moved.”
Zhou and his partner, Maxam Yeung, started Moov in 2018, and within the first year about 150 companies had signed up. This number of participating companies is now more than 1,000, and the value of equipment listed on the platform is $830 million today and growing rapidly.
The equipment business also provides some insights into where chipmakers and VCs are investing.
“The larger sizes (300mm) are moving a little bit less than the 150mm and 200mm equipment, especially with the constant rise of the IoT and edge,” Zhou said. “We’re also seeing a shift back down to 100mm. We serve all sizes, whether it’s an etcher or a reactor, and we serve everyone from large enterprises to smaller companies and even universities and R&D facilities. The key is using market data plus software to ensure a fresh and accurate supply, o we’re working on the supply and the demand concurrently.”

U.S. considers cutting trade with China’s biggest semiconductor manufacturer
In Short: The latest development in US-China trade broke over the holiday weekend, with the White House indicating SMIC, China’s largest semiconductor manufacturer, may be added to the “Entity List.” This development would block U.S. companies from selling to SMIC without a license. SMIC stock dropped 23% in response to this news.

Korean Government to Ramp up Investment to Commercialize AI Semiconductors
In Short: The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of South Korea announced plans to bolster support for AI semiconductors (high performance, low power) last week. Support includes 1.1 trillion won (shy of 1M USD), half of which will be invested in public-private funds to support the development of AI semiconductors by 2026.
